Luang Prabang, Nong Kiau
Lunch at local restaurant | Mandala Ou Resort or similar
Meet at your hotel and be ready for a scenic drive out to the Nong Khiau district, 140km northeast of Luang Prabang. Nong Kiaw is a small, rustic town by the bridge, surrounded by the beautiful limestone cliffs and the Nam Ou river. This little settlement is blessed with some of the most attractive natural settings in Northern Laos. Our first stop this morning is Ban Nayang in the Nambak district to meet Tai Lue weavers. The villagers here specialize in cotton production: handmade, with indigo natural dyeing. There is a possibility to meet Mr. Somdet, the founder of the project, to provide us with in-depth information about how weaving and dying are traditionally carried out and the initial purpose of the center. Shortly after this, we continued the drive to our final stop for check-in and rest.
Nong Kiau, Muang Ngoi, Luang Prabang
Breakfast at the resort, Lunch at local restaurant |
In the morning, we take a longtail motorboat up to Muang Ngoi. Muang Ngoi is a riverside village with no permanent electricity up until 2013. The town remains a low-key and still little-known destination. Only basic infrastructure is built; any other amenities such as banks, café shops, luxury hotels are not yet to come. Due to the richness of natural beauty, the town is famous for trekking, boating, caving, camping, and kayaking. Visit the nearby villages of Ban Na and Tham Kang, which are about a 30-minute walk apart. The cave was used as a bomb shelter during the Vietnam War era. Hunting and fishing are their main activities for a living, apart from growing their own crops. Return by boat back to Nong Kiau, where we catch our minivan for the trip back to Luang Prabang in the afternoon.
